NYT Photographer Injured

KABUL: Joao Silva, 44, a contract photographer working for The New Yorik Times, was wounded when he stepped on a mine October 23 while on patrol with American soldiers in southern Afghanistan.

He suffered leg wounds, and three American soldiers sustained concussions. Silva has photographed wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, southern Africa, the Balkans and the Middle East, and he has won many awards. He is co-author of The Bang-Bang Club, a chronicle of four photographers including himself covering violence in South Africa in the 1990s.
