AWARD YEAR: 1980
AWARD NAME: The Olivier Rebbot Award
RECIPIENT: Abbas
AFFILIATION: Gamma Liaison
HONORED WORK: “The Confiscated Revolution,” “Free”

In his book “The Confiscated Revolution,” published in France last year, and in the special newsmagazine “Free,” published by American Photographer Magazine, Iranian photographer Abbas graphically chronicled the course of the revolution, from the time of the Shah, through the days of conflict, and the year of the Islamic Republic. Educated in Algeria, France and England, Abbas over the years covered news in Vietnam, India, Pakistan, the Middle East, Northern Ireland and South Africa. When Iran expelled Western journalists and threatened Iranians whose work appeared in the western media with prison or worse, Abbas continued covering Teheran, even maintaining a residence there until recently. His home is in Paris, where he is affiliated with the Gamma picture agency.
