Book Night ‘For the Sun After Long Nights: The Story of Iran’s Women-led Uprising’

By Cathy Manso

The Overseas Press Club of America hosted a one-hour program spotlighting For the Sun After Long Nights: The Story of Iran’s Women-led Uprising, the new book co-authored by journalist Nilo Tabrizy. The discussion was moderated by Azmat Khan, Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter, with both speakers reflecting on the book’s journey and the women at the heart of Iran’s fight for freedom.

Early in the event, OPC Executive Director Patricia Kranz welcomed members and introduced the club’s governors before opening the conversation. Khan praised Tabrizy’s work, calling her a, “fearless storyteller” and noting the book’s resonance at a moment when women’s voices are central to global conversations about justice.

Tabrizy shared that the book was born out of both urgency and responsibility, “We wanted to make sure the voices of Iranian women, who risked everything in these protests, were not erased or forgotten.” She described how testimonies of activists and families shaped the narrative, giving readers an intimate view of the costs and courage behind the movement sparked by Mahsa Amini’s death.

Khan emphasized the book’s timeliness, “This isn’t just history, it’s ongoing. It’s about what it means to resist, and how that struggle reverberates far beyond Iran.”

As the hour closed, the dialogue underscored why the book has struck such a chord: it is both a testament to the power of women-led resistance and a deeply reported record of one of the most important social movements of the decade.

For the Sun After Long Nights has been placed on The New Yorker’s 2025 Long List of Non-Fiction, and the authors are being honored for the first time by the National Book Awards.
