VIDEO: ‘How I Did It’ – LA Times Photographer Marcus Yam Discusses Covering Conflict

On Jan. 12, the OPC hosted a discussion with Marcus Yam, a roving Los Angeles Times foreign correspondent and staff photographer.

Yam won the Pulitzer Prize for breaking news photography in 2022 for images documenting the U.S. departure from Afghanistan that capture the human cost of the historic change in the country. Yam discussed his work with Calvin Hom, executive director of photography at the Times. OPC Governor Sandra Stevenson, deputy director of photography at The Washington Post, moderated.

During the program, Yam and Hom discuss their reporting and editing process, including day-to-day decisions and what kinds of stories they wanted to cover. Yam also talks about his career move into visual journalism and international coverage, stories from the field while reporting in Afghanistan, and how he takes care of his mental health after reporting on trauma.

This program is part of the OPC’s “How I Did It Series,” which offers members the opportunity to interact with highly successful journalists.
