VIDEO: In the Thick of It – Peru
On March 9, the OPC hosted a discussion with reporters who have covered protests and violent clashes in Peru since early December 2022.

During the discussion, the panelists talked about their experience reporting on unrest, disruption and the aftermath of violence, as they navigated logistical challenges, hostility toward journalists, blocked roads and restricted travel. They also each gave insights about their recent assignments, and provided political and cultural context for complexities that led to the last few explosive months.
This program is the third installment of an OPC series called “In the Thick of It,” which gathers journalists to discuss region-specific reporting challenges.
The panelists are:
Samantha Schmidt, Bogota bureau chief for The Washington Post.
Alexander Villegas, senior correspondent for Reuters.
Rodrigo Abd, Pulitzer Prize winning photographer for The Associated Press and three-time winner of the OPC’s Best Feature Photography Award.
The moderator is Adam Jourdan, Reuters Bureau Chief, South Latin America. Adam has previous experience leading corporate news coverage in China and as an independent film director and producer.
