People Remembered: George Bookman

The OPC is saddened to learn that longtime member George Bookman has died at the age of 103.

Bookman, who first became an OPC member in 1958, had a storied journalism career that took him to postings across the globe, including in New York, Washington, Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia and Europe.

He covered the White House during the presidency of Franklin Delano Roosevelt and served as economics correspondent for TIME magazine. He later worked as a public relations executive and consultant for Wall Street firms.

Bookman chaired the OPC membership committee for many years until stepping down in 2012. In 1954, he accompanied a 185-mile hike along the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal to protest an editorial calling for it to be replaced with a scenic highway. He covered the protest for TIME.

Bookman’s, memoirs Headlines, Deadlines and Lifelines, were published in 2009.
