How I Did It – AP’s “Made in America, Watched Worldwide”

Join the Overseas Press Club for a “How I Did It” program featuring reporters from The Associated Press, winners of the OPC’s 2026 Malcolm Forbes and Morton Frank award for their groundbreaking series on global surveillance. The series also won the Pulitzer Prize for international reporting.

Moderated by Mary Rajkumar, AP’s global investigations editor and a governor of the OPC, the discussion will feature AP journalists including Dake Kang, who will explain how they uncovered the cross-border reach of surveillance systems, worked with sensitive sources, and verified complex technical findings under pressure.

Kang and the AP team exposed how the Chinese regime has enlisted American technology companies, including IBM, Oracle and Microsoft, in the build-out of what is arguably the world’s most repressive technology-based system of citizen surveillance. Similar systems now operate in Gaza, Lebanon, Nepal and even in the United States.

Join us for a candid look at the craft of investigative reporting and the realities of covering this consequential global issue.
