Gugliotta, 34, joined The Miami Herald in 1978, after serving as UPI correspondent in Argentina, Brazil and San Juan. He received a BA from Columbia and a Master’s from its School of International Affairs. He won three Bronze Stars for bravery as a naval lieutenant commanding a river boat in Viet Nam.
