Although Guy Gugliotta’s specialty is Latin America, last year he also covered Iran and Afghanistan. He produced brilliant interpretations, based on first-hand observation, of life under Soviet rule in Kabul; the trickle, then flood of Cubans from Mariel; the path of the assassins of former Nicaraguan President Anastasio Somoza.
Gugliotta, 34, joined The Miami Herald in 1978, after serving as UPI correspondent in Argentina, Brazil and San Juan. He received a BA from Columbia and a Master’s from its School of International Affairs. He won three Bronze Stars for bravery as a naval lieutenant commanding a river boat in Viet Nam.
