AWARD DATE: 2000

AWARD NAME: The Whitman Bassow Award 2000

AWARD RECIPIENT: Tom Horton, Heather Dewar, Frank Langfitt

AWARD RECIPIENT AFFILIATION: The Baltimore Sun

AWARD HONORED WORK: “Nitrogen’s Deadly Harvest”

The reporters, in a two-year effort, expose how the world’s environment is being damaged by nitrogen. Their reporting takes them from Europe through the U.S. to Australia. Denied visas by the Chinese government, they bring in Frank Langfitt, the Suns Beijing bureau chief, to uncover such problems as the tainting of the Yangtze River by fertilizer runoff. Their research is strong, and the writing is clear.
