Matsumoto reported on the toppling of the Communist Party in East Germany, Czechoslovakia and Romania. In one on-the-scene spot, he came under sniper fire at a Romanian army checkpoint in Bucharest. He crawled beneath an armored personnel carrier after seeing the officer with whom he had just spoken take a bullet in the head.
