Best business and/or economic reporting from abroad for newspapers and/or wire services

Moscow bureau chief Gumbel explored the nitty-gritty of the daily life of ordinary Soviet citizens to illustrate the paradox of Mikhail Gorbachev’s policy of perestroika: that well-intentioned economic reforms have made life worse, not better. In this two-part series, Gumbel also painted the sad picture of an industrial town in the Ukraine once selected by Lenin to be workers’ “paradise,” now reduced by inefficient management and resistance to reform to an economic and ecological disaster area.
