Best photographic reporting or interpretation from abroad requiring exceptional courage and enterprise
AWARD YEAR: 1980
AWARD NAME: Best Photographic Reporting from Abroad for Newspapers or Wire Services
RECIPIENT: Gilles Peress
AFFILIATION: New York Times Magazine
HONORED WORK: “A Vision of Iran”
“A Vision of Iran” is a jarring, kaleidoscopic array of images caught by photo-journalist Gilles Peress on a visit to Iran last summer. He pictured raucous rallies, youngsters smoking heroin, Savak agents in jail-and Iranians going about their lives as usual, shopping, idling in teahouses, even visiting amusement parks, seeking momentary escape from tension. Peress has been taking pictures since 1970, both for industrial clients, including’ major corporations, travel photography in the Seychelles, Guatemala and the Burgundy region, and photojournalistic reportage from Northern Ireland, Turkish immigrants in Europe, poor peasants in France. He now lives in New York.
