HONORED WORK: “Wide Angle: Birth of a Surgeon”

There are three doctors for every 100,000 people in Mozambique. So, midwives are crucial in this country of more than 21 million, but sometimes they are not skilled enough to save lives of women during childbirth. With this information, the Wide Angle team set out with a young midwife on her riveting journey to becoming a surgeon. Exceptional enter- prising reporting and revealing cinematography deliver a story that is alternately joyful and heartbreaking. “Birth of a Surgeon” is a testimonial to the human spirit and to a country’s efforts to tackle maternal mortality.
