The Thomas Nast Award 2003

Best cartoons on international affairs

YEAR: 2003
AWARD NAME: The Thomas Nast Award 2003
RECIPIENT: Tom Toles
AFFILIATION: The Washington Post
HONORED WORK: Best Cartoons

Here’s a typical scene from Toles’ world: George Bush directs a stage play called “The Rebuilding of Iraq,” and the UN gets to play the part of a tree. “The tree is a vital role,” says Bush from his director’s chair, “especially when we get to the sawmill scene.” Toles’ drawings are deceptively simple and his humor is wickedly sharp. Whether he is lampooning the US president or Saudi sheikhs, Ariel Sharon or Yasir Arafat, he hits just the right nerve.
