A memorial service commemorating the life and work of Liu Xiaobo, the recipient of the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize and one of China’s foremost pro-democracy activists and writers, and celebrating Liu Xia, the Beijing-based poet, artist, and activist, will take place on Oct. 19.

The embodiment of resistance to oppression and the fight for free speech in China, Liu Xiaobo passed away on July 13, 2017, less than three weeks after the announcement that he had been moved from his prison cell to a nearby hospital with final-stage liver cancer. Xiaobo had been imprisoned since 2008, and it is clear that his death was the consequence of an intentional lack of medical care on the part of the Chinese government. His memorial service, as well as a celebration of his wife and their work together, will take place on Thursday, Oct. 19 from 10:30am-12pm at the National Cathedral (3101 Wisconsin Ave NW, Washington, DC 20016) in Washington DC.
