The book by was written by journalist Dom Phillips, who was killed in 2022 while reporting in the Amazon rainforest on the effects of deforestation. After his death, a group of journalists and activists took up his work to finish his book.
The event at Rizzoli, cosponsored by the OPC, featured Phillips’ wife, Alessandra Sampaio, and Andrew Fishman, one of the journalists who worked on the book. Matthew Hay Brown, Americas editor for The Washington Post, served as moderator.
During the program, Sampaio and Fishman talk about what the project means to each of them, why saving the Amazon from deforestation is so important, the current status of the Amazon in the aftermath of former President Jair Bolsonaro’s government, and the process of finishing the book after Phillips’ murder. The discussion was followed by a Q&A, when audience members asked about consumer responsibility, which leaders to support and actions to take in protecting the Amazon, and justice for Phillips and others who were killed or attacked for their work.
