VIDEO: Book Night – Dean Yates and Mary Binks Discuss ‘Line in the Sand’
On Nov. 14, 2023, former Reuters journalists Dean Yates and Mary Binks discussed their experience grappling with Yates’ post-traumatic stress disorder and his 7-year recovery process, which Yates recounts in his memoir, Line in the Sand.

Yates and Binks, speaking together publicly for the first time for the OPC, talked about the reasons they felt it was important to talk together as a couple, warning signs they each saw that indicated Yates needed professional help, the importance of his treatment, the importance of getting treatment early, Binks’ tools for coping with secondhand trauma, as well as Yates’ current mental health status and job as a peer worker in a mental health clinic.
