VIDEO: In The Thick Of It – Haiti

As violence and turmoil continued to grip Port-au-Prince on Jan. 26, the OPC hosted an online panel discussion with reporters who have been covering Haiti over the past year of unrest. Though the program had already been planned earlier this month, it was held just one day after deadly clashes between police, armed gangs and protesters that left the panelists facing uncertain conditions and pressing news deadlines.

The panelists were:

Jacqueline Charles, Haiti and Caribbean Correspondent for the Miami Herald.

Macollvie Neel, executive editor of the Haitian Times.

Natalie Kitroeff, New York Times bureau chief for Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean.

Andre Paultre, reporter for The New York Times.

Evens Sanon, reporter for The Associated Press.

The moderator was Singeli Agnew, a governor of the OPC and an independent cinematographer, producer and director of documentary films and current affairs series on a range of platforms. She was a member of the New York Times team that won the OPC’s Edward R. Murrow Award in 2019.

This program is the first installment of a new series launched by the OPC called In the Thick of It, bringing together journalists to discuss region-specific reporting challenges.
