VIDEO: Mentoring The Next Generation In Fact-Based News

On Tuesday, June 13, the OPC and The Media Line, an American news agency covering the Middle East, co-sponsored a forum to discuss the Press and Policy Student Program.

The forum featured presentations by Felice Friedson, president and CEO of The Media Line and founder of the Press and Policy Student Program, and Marvin Kalb, Edward R. Murrow professor at Harvard and senior fellow at the Joan Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics and Public Policy.

Friedson also talks to three alums of the program: Katie Beiter, Liana B. Baker and Asaf Zilberfarb, and to Arthur and Shirley Sotloff, the parents of Steven Sotloff, an American-Israeli journalist who was brutally killed by ISIS in August 2014. Steven filed stories for The Media Line while working in the Middle East.

The program also included remarks about the crucial link between policy and journalism from singer Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul and Mary, who also sang a song and encouraged attendees to join in.

Former OPC President David Andelman helped to facilitate the event.

The Media Line’s Press and Policy Student Program connects students studying journalism, public policy or international relations with The Media Line news bureau in the Middle East for semester-long mentorship with veteran journalists. Selected students can earn academic credit or pursue independent study.
