Four newsmen have been killed during the fighting in Georgia, the International News Safety Institute reported on August 12 from Brussels. They were Russians Alexander Klimchuk, owner of Georgia’s independent photo agency Caucasus Press Images, and Grigol Chikhladze, Newsweek Russia; Dutch cameraman Stans Storimans, news station RTL; and an unidentified Georgian journalist and his driver. At least 10 other correspondents were wounded.

South Ossetia as Bait

Why South Ossetia? The blighted territory was mere ‘bait,’ which would result in the catching of the ‘fish,’ which is the much more valuable piece of post-Soviet real-estate of Abkhazia (or possibly, Georgia itself, sans Misha Saakshivili). To understand why and how the Russians could use either of these entities requires a little bit of background information.
Game Cocktail

Everyone’s in the spirit! The Centro Bar at the Kerry Centre in Beijing even introduced an Olympic-inspired drink. OPC member Rebecca Fannin is blogging in Beijing; catch updates here and on www.silicondragon.blogspot.com.
Georgia: A Five-Hour Lunch

Your responses to my ramble from Istanbul on the historical causes of the current crisis in Georgia were much appreciated, and assured me that I indeed had made the right decision to do an abrupt face and travel to Tbilisi.
Tuning Into PPS Live
I am watching the Olympics via web 2.00– on www.pps.tv.com, an online video streaming site that has rights to broadcast the Games in China. Interesting. I first discovered the so-called PPStream in March 2007, when the Shanghai startup got funding from two venture capital firms I know, Qiming Ventures and Ceyuan Ventures. A Very Good Year

Today Show Tweets

Talk about social networking. I spotted the Today Show on Twitter, looked up their address and sent them a "Tweet," complaining about how slow the web is. Twitter is a micro-blogging Web site. Beijing, Still Empty
Want more proof that Beijing didn’t fill up with tourists during the Olympics? Where IS everyone? Guess the new visa procedures kept more people away than many had projected. OPC member Rebecca Fannin is blogging in Beijing; catch updates here and on www.silicondragon.blogspot.com.

On Tour With the NBC Crew

The Celestial Court Chinese restaurant is closed for business. It’s taken over by desks equipped with high-speed, Internet-connected personal computers. That’s a rarity in Beijing, I’ve found. So many people are online here now at the same time that bandwidth is strained. OPC member Rebecca Fannin is blogging in Beijing; catch her updates here and on http://www.silicondragon.blogspot.com.
