Gratitude to Media and Polish People at Solidarity Reunion

To an audience of more than 250 assembled on November 9 by the Overseas Press Club and the Polish Consulate in New York to celebrate the 30th anniversary of communist Eastern Europe’s first free trade union, Konstanty Gebert, then a young Polish journalist, recalled five rules to live by, especially for Polish journalists reporting during that by-gone era.

Online Awards Reveal Some Surprises

The 2010 Online Journalism Awards recognized journalists for their compelling pieces this year. General Excellence in Online Journalism award winners included Msnbc.com, California Watch and the Center for Investigative Reporting, The Texas Tribune, The Las Vegas Sun and the Greenspun Media Group, La Nacion and OWNI. OPC Board Member Travis Fox was part of the ProPublica, the New Orleans Times-Picayune and Frontline team that won the Gannett Foundation Award for Innovative Investigative Journalism, Small Site, which include a $25,000 prize for Law and Disorder.

RSF: Press Freedom Index 2010

Although Reporters Without Borders welcomed the enactment of the Daniel Pearl Act in May 2010, requiring the State Department to list countries that threaten press freedoms and tolerate violence against journalists, several incidents over the past year raise questions about the government’s use of national security concerns to try to curb media access to issues of legitimate public interest.

Media Summit Discussed the Role of Niche News Model

Thanks in part to Overseas Press Club member Chriss Swaney, Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh does its best to keep pace with all the latest ins-and-outs of the media business. Swaney put together a “Media Summit” to discuss “The Rise of the (Private) Niche News Model.” OPC board member Allan Dodds Frank contributed to the hotly contested debate.
