We write on this day, World Press Freedom Day, to protest your continuing attacks on a free press in Iran. To the best of our knowledge, there are 193 journalists imprisoned around the world — most of them solely for having done their jobs as journalists. Among the 29 countries that have put their journalists in jail, Iran, with 11, has the fourth largest number. Only China, Cuba, and Eritrea have imprisoned more of our colleagues.

Kazakhstan May 3, 2004

On this day, World Press Freedom Day, which is observed throughout the world, we have learned that 193 journalists are imprisoned in the jails of 29 countries — most of them solely for doing their jobs. Kazakhstan, which is one of the 29, is reported to be holding in custody Sergei Duvanov, editor of the magazine, Bulletin, published by the Kazakhstan International Bureau of Human Rights. A frequent contributor to opposition web sites, Duvanov has been known for his sharp criticism of the Kazakh government.
