The International News Safety Institute launched a revamped website on September 11. The major change is that INSI is now a dot-org, befitting its status as a charity, rather than a commercial .com. The new website address is www.newssafety.org.

An Ambassador Among Us
Yutaka Yoshizawa, an OPC member since 1995 when he was deputy consul general of Japan and director of the Japan Information Center in New York City, was appointed Japan’s ambassador to Fiji in September.

In 1991, foreign correspondent Bernie Krisher was visiting Cambodia from his home in Tokyo, and Prince (later King) Norodom Sihanouk invited him to dinner. When Krisher told Sihanouk that he wanted to start a newspaper in Cambodia, the Prince replied, “Please don’t do that, it is dangerous. You may get killed. Please do something else.”
Journalist Toll in Caucasus Region
In one week, two television reporters were killed and a newspaper editor beaten in Russia’s volatile north Caucasus region. Magomed Yevloyev, an opposition journalist and owner of the Web site ingushetiya, was fatally shot in the head while police were driving him to a police station August 31.

OPC member Jack Casserly brightened the Internet in August when he and his wife, Joy, filed a collection of notes to God hand written in childish scrawl by little children.

4 Journalists Killed in Georgia
Four newsmen have been killed during the fighting in Georgia, the International News Safety Institute reported on August 12 from Brussels. They were Russians Alexander Klimchuk, owner of Georgia’s independent photo agency Caucasus Press Images, and Grigol Chikhladze, Newsweek Russia; Dutch cameraman Stans Storimans, news station RTL; and an unidentified Georgian journalist and his driver. At least 10 other correspondents were wounded.
