HONG KONG: Clare Holliingworth is the British correspondent who on her first overseas assignment telephoned her editor in London from Poland with an eyewitness report on Germany’s 1939 invasion of Poland that started World War II. Clare observed her 99th birthday in October. After WWII, Hollingworth, who spent 40 years with London’s Daily Telegraph, covered conflicts in Palestine, Algeria, China, Aden and Vietnam.
Nearly blind, she was toasted at a party by members of the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Hong Kong. She lives in Hong Kong.
