The OPC’s China Working Group joins the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of China in expressing disappointment that the government of Xi Jinping and the International Olympic Committee seem determined to hold the Winter Games in complete lock-down mode.
“We recognize that the pandemic is a major consideration, but it should not be used as an excuse to deny Western journalists access to game sites and sow confusion about visas, which are already happening,” the OPC committee said in a statement. “China is the world’s second largest economy and the outside world needs to understand more about what’s happening internally, not less. We support the courageous stand taken by the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of China.”
