New York, Sept. 10, 2020—The Overseas Press Club of America, an 81-year-old organization that awards highly coveted prizes devoted to international news coverage for an American audience, elected a new president Tuesday night.

Paula Dwyer, senior editor at Bloomberg News, was elected president of the OPC, as the club is widely known.

Working with Bloomberg’s New York editing hub, Dwyer focuses on business, finance and economic policy. She was London bureau chief for Businessweek and Washington economics editor for The New York Times. She co-authored “Take on the Street,” a New York Times bestseller, with former SEC Chairman Arthur Levitt. At Businessweek, Dwyer shared an OPC award for coverage of globalization in the 1990s, and as an opinion writer for Bloomberg, was a 2012 Pulitzer finalist for editorials on Europe’s debt crisis.

“In the coming years, it will be crucial for journalism organizations to stand up for our profession in the face of financial hardships and attacks on our integrity,” Dwyer said. “It will also be important to help guide the next generation of journalists as they take the baton and carry on the free-press mission worldwide.”

The OPC was founded in 1939 in New York by a group of foreign correspondents to encourage the highest standards of professional integrity and skill in the reporting of news and to promote the freedom of the press throughout the world.

The club also announced results of the election for other officers and board members. Azmat Khan, contributing writer at The New York Times Magazine; Douglas Jehl, foreign editor of The Washington Post; and Scott Kraft, managing editor of the Los Angeles Times, were elected vice presidents. Deborah Amos of NPR is Treasurer and Josh Fine of HBO’s Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel is Secretary.

Active members elected or reelected to the board are: John Avlon of CNN; Albert Goldson, an independent commentator; Marjorie Miller of The Associated Press; Adriane Quinlan of VICE News Tonight, Peter Spiegel of the Financial Times; Liam Stack and Sandra Stevenson of The New York Times; Marina Guevara Walker of the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting; Vivienne Walt of TIME and FORTUNE; and Michael Williams of Reuters.

Associate board members elected or reelected are Emma Daly of Human Rights Watch, Pete Engardio of Boston Consulting Group and Laurie Hays of Edelman.
