Cyberattack on IPI: Evidence Points to Retaliation for Press Freedom Work in Hungary

The International Press Institute (IPI) said in a statement that since Sept. 1, the organization has been battling “a targeted and sustained cyberattack” that seems to be retaliation for advocacy work on behalf of independent media in Hungary, amid a spate of similar attacks since this summer.

In an IPI press release, the organization said the attack started with a series of distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks that crashed their website for three days. The website has since been restored and security bolstered, but DDoS attacks have continued.

“This ongoing cyberattack is the most brazen and direct attack on IPI’s online infrastructure in our organization’s history,” the organization said in the statement.
