Government of Mexico
Dear Mr. Garduno:
Many thanks for your thoughtful reply to our recent letter. The Overseas Press Club of America is gratified by your government’s determination to protect your country’s journalists, and glad to be reminded of the many steps you have taken to achieve this goal. As we have remarked in several recent letters, we fully understand how difficult this is in light of the struggle to restore law and order in Mexico’s current crisis.
We hope that your National Program on Human Rights (2010-2012) will succeed in all of its goals, and will result in the arrest of the killers of the many journalists whose murders now go unsolved. We also repeat our suggestion that President Calderon declare a national day of mourning to recognize and honor the journalists who have given their lives in the cause of bringing the truth to their countrymen. This action would symbolize and underscore the urgency of the situation, as well as encouraging Mexico’s courageous journalists not to lose faith in their cause or give in to self-censorship.
Thank you again for your letter, and our best wishes for success in your efforts to protect journalists in Mexico.
Very truly yours,
Larry Martz
