Your Excellency:

We write to urge a thorough and transparent investigation into the murder of Ilya Zimin, the award-winning journalist who worked as a correspondent for NTV’s investigative program, “Profession: Reporter.” Zimin’s body was found, heavily beaten, lying in a pool of blood in his Moscow apartment. There were signs of a violent struggle, but according to news reports, police said there was no sign of forced entry. A bloody fingerprint that was not Zimin’s was found on a light switch.

Police and prosecutors said the killing was not related to Zimin’s work, but they gave no reason for this conclusion, and NTV News Editor, Tatyana Mitkova, said she did not rule out the possibility that the murder was linked to Zimin’s investigative work for the television channel. A laptop computer and a cell phone had been stolen from the apartment. Curiously, according to the daily, Kommersant , a concierge at Zimin’s apartment building said three men with purported police identifications visited the reporter at 10 a.m., Sunday, and left an hour later; but authorities said later that the three men had visited another apartment, not Zimin’s.

Because at least twelve journalists have been murdered in contract-style slayings since 2000, and all these cases remain unsolved, it is especially important that this case be rigorously investigated and that the killers be brought to justice. Russia is one of the most dangerous countries in the world for journalists to work in, and as we have recently written you, there are growing doubts about your sincerity in promising to work for press freedom. We hope you will bring your personal attention and powers to bear in this case.

Thank you for your attention. We would appreciate a reply.

Respectfully yours,
Larry Martz
