In this installment of our Video Memoir series, Richard Stolley, who worked for Life and Time magazines in various roles from reporter to bureau chief and managing editor. He is the founding managing editor of People magazine and director of special projects for Time Inc.
During the video, he talks about reporting on desegregation of schools in the South and violence while working for Life magazine in Atlanta.
“There were two things you could admit to in the South,” he said. “One is ‘I’m from the FBI.’ But if you did that you’d have a gun on your hip. Or you coul sa ‘I’m from Life magazine,’ and there you’d have a pencil on your hip.”
He also talks about covering politics in California and the assasination of President John F. Kennedy, including a meeting with Abraham Zapruder and a first look at his famous film.
