The OPC strongly condemns the arrest and imprisonment of El Malick Seck, editor of the Dakar-based daily newspaper, 24 Heures Chrono.

IWMF Honors Lederer

n_lederer_award_sm.jpgOPC member Edith Lederer, temporarily injured, was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the International Women’s Media Foundation at the organization’s annual luncheon in the Waldorf-Astoria October 21.

Tribune Clips AP

The Tribune Company reported that its daily newspapers will drop the AP news service, the first major chain to drop the AP in response to the new rates.

Once again, OPC members are saddened to learn of the most recent persecution of a newsman in Gambia for doing his job of reporting the news.

Mexico October 16, 2008

Having just written to the President of Mexico about the plight of journalists and the lack of action in prosecuting their murderers, we feel compelled to write again because we have just learned of the deaths of two more journalists in the last few days. This brings to twenty three the number of journalists murdered in Mexico since 2000. Seven others have disappeared and never been found.

Thailand October 16, 2008

We write out of sincere concern for several journalists and activists in Thailand. On October 8, the Thai Journalists Association issued a global call to action urging a halt to the violent incidents and the ensuing injuries and damages caused by several clashes between policemen, who fired tear gas, and demonstrators of the People’s Alliance for Democracy.

Report of Press Freedom Committee October 14, 2008

The OPC Press Freedom Committee has written letters of protest to Russia, China, Egypt, Mexico and Thailand this quarter. We also recommended the immediate release of Harry Nicolaides, and Australian novelist whose misfortune was to mention, in three lines of a 300-page novel, that the King of Thailand’s son had been married, but his wife had to leave the country.

We write to call attention to the latest killing of a Mexican journalist: radio host, Alejandro Zenón Fonseca Estrada, of EXA-FM, who was gunned down on September 23 by four unidentified men carrying assault rifles as he was putting up anti-crime posters in Villahermosa.
